What Can I Eat When I Have Tonsillitis?
92What is Tonsillitis?
The condition known as tonsillitis is an infection which comes in different forms but essentially relates to an inflammation of one or both tonsils within the throat. Determining what to eat when we have tonsillitis can be difficult, as swallowing is likely to be difficult or even nigh on impossible. It can also prove difficult in finding a variety of foodstuffs to eat when we have tonsillitis, as so many foods are either out of bounds, or at least appear to be. This page is therefore a brief look at some varied ideas of what foodstuffs we can eat when we have tonsillitis, which are both as easy as possible to swallow, yet varied in their composition and taste.
Important Note:
This site is not intended as a tool for medical self-diagnosis. It is merely based on the author's own experiences in the immediate aftermath of having been diagnosed with the infection. As with any other suspected illness or condition, you should consult your registered medical practitioner as soon as possible if you suspect that you may be suffering from tonsillitis.
You may find some of the comments at the bottom of this page, regarding different experiences of tonsillitis, to be useful and of interest.
The Various Stages of What You Can Eat with Tonsillitis
It is likely when you are first diagnosed with tonsillitis that your throat will be extremely sore and that swallowing anything at all - even liquids - will be painful. As your condition improves, however, the pain will ease and you will be able to swallow more substantial foodstuffs on an ongoing basis. I will therefore begin this site with those easiest foodstuffs to swallow and progress as we go along on to what you will be able to eat as you slowly get better.
Simple Yoghurt and Tonsillitis
Yoghurt will be a common foodstuff recommended to anyone suffering from tonsillitis. There are a couple of points of which to take note, however, when considering which type of yoghurt to purchase.
In the first instance, it is important not to buy a brand of yoghurt which contains such as pieces of real fruit. This is for the simple reason that the fruit pieces will prove difficult to swallow in the earliest stages of your condition.
Secondly - in keeping with healthy eating! - choose a low fat brand of yoghurt, in order to keep both the levels of saturated fats you are likely to be consuming during this time to a minimum.
Ice Cream
Ice cream is another obvious foodstuff to eat when sufferring from tonsillitis or any other form of sore throat. Not only does it slip easily over the palate, its refreshing coldness can be like water on the flames of the pain and irritation. It is important, however, to choose straightforward ice cream and not a fancy, ice cream based dessert, which may contain solids which will only irritate your throat. Again, look for the low fat option and even save money by going for the supermarket's own brand. It is the coldness of the ice cream you are most likely to require, not its subtle taste, which your ability to detect may be impaired due to your condition, anyway.
Ice Cream and Milk Jelly
Ice cream and jelly is of course the traditional favourite of millions of children but this jelly is a little bit different. This is what I heard called milk jelly as a young child and attempted to recreate yesterday for the first time in nigh on thirty years. Unfortunately, it would appear that my memory of the preparation method has become distorted over the years but although it did not turn out anything like I intended, it was and is still thoroughly enjoyable.
Milk jelly is incredibly simple to prepare, though it does take several hours to set. All I did was take one 5oz table jelly (jello in the USA) and break it up in to pieces. Add the pieces to a pyrex measuring jug, followed by enough boiling water to make the mixture up to three quarters of a pint. Stir until the jelly is fully dissolved.
Pour a three quarter pint can of evaporated milk in to a bowl or jelly mould and add the jelly solution. Stir well and refrigerate until set.
Freshly Squeezed Fruit Juice and Smoothies
Freshly squeezed fruit juice and smoothies are an excellent way of ensuring that you get all of your required vitamins while your throat is sore and you are restricted in what you can eat. There is virtually no limit to what can be included in these often extremely nutritious drinks and below is a fantastic book, currently available on Amazon, with well over a hundred tasty and nutritious suggestions. Click on the book's image to order your copy today!
Feeling a Little Better? Try some Scrambled Egg
Scrambled egg is a step up from the likes of ice cream but is still fairly easy on an inflamed throat. In order to make the eggs extra light, try adding one tbsp of milk per two eggs.
Beat two eggs thoroughly with the milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Melt a little butter in a non-stick saucepan and pour in the eggs, turning the heat up fairly high initially to start the cooking process.
Once the eggs begin to solidify, turn the heat down to medium and stir constantly with a wooden spoon. Stir as though folding flour in to a cake mixture, with wide, slow movements, rather than stirring vociferously. This will help to keep the eggs light and fluffy, as opposed to them taking on the consistency of coarse gravel. When the eggs are done, remove them from the heat and fold in 1oz of grated/shredded hard cheese.
Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes with Mint
Mashed potatoes on their own are probably not one of the most appetising meals imaginable. There are a great many ways in which we can spice up mashed potatoes, however, in order to make them infinitely more appealing and this is but one suggestion.
Peel and chop two maris piper potatoes and add to boiling, salted water. Simmer for twenty to twenty-five minutes until soft. Drain them well and add them to a bowl. Mash them thoroughly before stirring in a tbsp or two of double (heavy) cream, one grated/crushed garlic clove and a tsp of freshly chopped mint. Season with salt to taste and stir well before serving.

Hello, today i found eating popcorn was good. after chewing it was nice and soft but had little sharp bits to scrape my throat. Scraping of the throat hurts like heck, but it does help the healing process. in the UK if you get yout tonsils removed the hospital will give you toast (toasted bread) to eat. it seems a bit harsh but speeds up the healing.

hey, im 16 years old and i'v only had tonsil stones before , i was confused about the difference between tonsillitis and tonsil stones so i looked it up turns out i have tonsillitis.... yay for me! :/ i only starting seeing the white part in my tonsils last night, i looked at them today and they got worse my moms in saint john until tomorrow, so i wanted to go to the hospital tomorrow but its going to storm ... i find gurgling warm water and salt helps a little and swallowing honey i'v been takeing ibuprofen 400's one and a half and it works really good , i cant get any ice cream until my mom comes back , last night i woke up at 3 am my throat hurt real bad so i gurgled warm water and salt then swallowed some honey and took a ibuprofen and a half and went to sleep when i woke up for my exam my throat was SOOOOO!!! much better it still hurt a little but as long as i could eat and drink i was good to go
i dont wanna get my tonsils removed.
i was wondering if once you get tonsillitis are you more likely to get it more often (if you dont get your tonsils removed) the information on here is a really big help im not as scared about it now , thank you all sooo much xoxo best wishes to everyone , i hope the pain goes away soon .
Gargling with aspirin was like magic for me.
You guys this is horrible. I cant sleep,i cant eat. I cant even take my pills. Thats how swollen my throat is.. Sometimes i cant breathe and i panic and choke on my saliva..i have almost 15 teas everyday,it helps for a while but then the pain comes back..i will try the ice cream tho. It sounds alot better. And when i get better im gonna get these bitc**s removed.
Is it possible to get tonsilitis if your tonsils have been removed? Keenan in pain
So I got a sore throat a couple days ago (Sunday) but I'm gunna go to the doctor when the clinics open. Its 4:30am (Tuesday) and I haven't been able to sleep or talk in those couple days. Swallowing anything is excruciating. I just turned 20 and I've never had this before:S Coughing is so painful I can barely do it:(
I find cold drinks are painful now but at the first sign of a sore throat I had smoothies and milkshakes at it was good but now that I have no voice it's a no no. But I've been drinking warm chai tea and it's a temporary pain reliever. Another awesome trick is eating a spoonful of straight honey. The first swallow is painful (obviously) but it soothes your throat like nothing else, and it's not dairy so you won't have to worry about the mucus. Even though it's pure sugar, your body could use it.
Another awesome trick is making a steam tent and breathing through your mouth. Just boil some water and put it into a bit bowl with a couple ice cubes (you don't want it so hot you burn yourself) and put a small towel over your head. Also a warm/hot cloth on your neck helps with the swelling too.
One last thing, if you can manage even half a lemon neo citrine (I have to have TONS of sugar and honey in it so it's really sweet and doesn't burn from the acidity,) it'll help with your cough and throat and help you get some much needed sleep.
Hopefully these tips are helpful, all the other ones definitely were:) Get better everyone!!:)
I'm on day 3 of Tonsillitis. Viral I'm guessing. Doctor didn't see any white spots to indicate strep throat. It's been killing me to swollow, and makes for a lousy sleep. I've discovered a few things though.
1. Ibuprofin seems to relieve some of the pain. I suspect because it is an anti-inflammitory....but that is just my theory.
2. Swallowing with my tongue in the mouth close and tongue pulled away from the tonsils helps SO MUCH. It's hard to describe, but i consciously try and push my tongue downward...sorry I can't describe it, but it alleviates 90percent of my swallowing pain!!
3. Cold ice cream is wonderful for me....but I think the amount of mucous a person gets from it is entirely dependent upon several factors..... again my perspective would suggest responses would vary based on several things, such as:
1. Do you have a runny nose kind of cold with your swollen tonsils? How severe is your cold. Mine is mild, so milk/dairy doesn't seem ot bother me much.
2. Are you consumming a product with whole milk or 2% or 1% or skim. I find that 1% milk is my favorite. I get that milk flavor with out the syrupy richness of cream...which in my opinion may help stir up a mucous or phlegm. (I do LOVE my whipped cream though...just not when I'm feeling this lousy:-(
Anyhow.....I recommend using a different placement of the tongue to swallow and well as an anti-inflammatory as the best approach to pain relief....at least at this point. I haven't tried other methods I've seen on the internet such as crushed aspirin gargled with a dark soda (not to be swollowed), or gargling with tumeric and warm water. (I may try the tumeric tomorrow as it's suppose to be a natural/homeopathic approach to help with pain...in my limited understanding), nor have I gargled with warm salt water, or honey...etc. etc..
I think it good to remember that what works for one doesn't always work for another.
And in conclusion: I also rely on prayer, drinking plenty of fluids and rest. My best wishes to those of you out there suffering this way.
Christine
Im having this for almost a week now , it hurts kinda bad, this article helped me out alot . Good One.
hey..i'm considering removing mine.
every night i have blistering fever for the last 3 days
hi everyone ive had tonsilitis almost every 6 months last year and it was horible. ive also endured an ear drum blockage for 4months. my voice have become horse and i snore a lot (LOL). the pain has stopped thou but im getting the tonsils out in June...*cant wait*!! in my own experiences oranges, bananas, avocados, and sour milk are a very bad idea for tonsilitis, hence ive decided to stay away from them completely until after surgery. ice cream is the best (a doctor once recommended).
oops today i dicovered for the first time ive got tonsillitus and thought i better read up on what foods and drinks i could have and i started to read this very helpful page sat eating chocolates and a big glass of milk hmmm ooopsy! Will be searching my cupboards for lots of cold and fresh fruitful things :) wish i had some ice cream. Does anyone know if shouting makes it worse? Im a bit of a shouter you see :/
tonssilites are basically caused due to resdues of calcium gatherings in throat. if you are having them quite regularly check your food contents and try to avoid dairy based products as they can make thing go further wrong. Pain killers and and luke salted water can help. Goggling with luke salted water helps as sodium cloride presipitate calcium based substances and help recovering quicker
im 22 years old female and i had my tonsils removed here in California a few days ago... day 1 and 2 i was feeling ok, i was talking but not so good.. day 3 was terrible! my pain level was 8 and i was crying and crying was making it worse. the pain meds only do so much for me.. my body temp. burns it off and swallowing is the worse pain in the world. i havent eaten since tuesday [the day before surgery] all i can have is jello, ice cream, ice water, broth and smoothies.. the only time i dnt feel pain is when i have more of my meds than i should have at nite to sleep... but i have cotton mouth too much salivia at once, my teeth hurt, my jaw, my ears and today is only day 4... i feel like i made a wrong choice but once this past im hoping everything will get better... day 4 is coughing alot.
Put a hand towl in ice water and let it soak, then place on the skin on your neck in the area you feel the pain, numbs it enough to eat easier and the pain isn't too bad for a few hours as well :-)
i have read a lot of the comments and i dont understand how cold stuffs can soothe the pain, they actually make the condition worse n avoiding spicy food is recommended.this is the 4th Time i've got it this year n am sure it's because i had way too
Umm.. Is it alright if I eat noodles with seafood in it? My mum told me not to eat any meat during this period
This is my third day from my first experience with tonsillitis. My throat actually feels better now after having some medication prescribed to me. Is it totally curable? Cause from the posts, it sounds as though it comes back.
My mom freaks out when i eat ice cream but it actually works a pain reliever
I was diagnosed with tonsillitis on Wednesday and started taking Penicillin on Wednesday evening. I am just starting to feel better now (Saturday). Anti-biotics do work but take a few days to kick in. I frequently get tonsillitis but with varying debilitating effects each time. This bout has been the worst so far. I am trying to decide whether to ask for them to be taken out - any advice whether this is worthwhile? I get the infection about 4 times a a year and have done for 25 years :-(
Hi i'm 12 and I'm preety sure I have tonsilitus... I have had this before...but not this bad. If I swollow i will be dying of pain. Everything I try to eat i puke it back up... I'm starving and trying to eat cold things.. like flavored ice. But its not helping... PLEASE help I feel like im going to die if i dont eat.... Thank's! :)
It all started 3 days back with a noisy tummy, diziness, a slightly sore throat, sweating and feeling extremely cold the next minute, difficulty to breathe, full time saliva in my mouth. 1st diagnoses stomach colic.I had to rush back to the doctor yesterday and the 2nd diagnosis, sever tonsilitis.Pain is unbearable. Cant eat, drink anything.I cried my way though drinking very soft porrigde and fresh milk today as I had not eaten for 2 days and I feel very week. My sister tried a healthy veg soup for me but it burns my tonsils bad. The rain just stopped and I am going to the store for a cols ice cream and smooth youghurt. I am starving. I cant even take my pills without crying out Loud. Its the worste feeling ever.
Im really scared because im young and never had it before and i am terrified of the doctors so i dont want to have them taken out, but i dont want the pain of when i swallow:(
please help...
I was told I had tonsillitis yesterday my throat hurt but I felt okay. Today I was up since 4am being sick can't even keep water down my throat is burning I'm hot one minute and cold another. I need to eat as it's 2.30pm now but I'm scared it will make me sick again. Any suggestion would be great?
I got told from my doctor I have glandular fever and tonsillitis :/ FML
I talked to my doctor today about the whole dairy thing and he kinda laughed about it, he said there is always an argument about dairy while being sick and he said if you ask me it doesn't change anything. And while having tonsillitis I have been eating yummy vanilla ice cream once a day and it has helped sooth my throat more than you can imagine!
Was diagnosed with viral tonsillitus just yesterday morning(wednesday), and its now thursday and my tonsils have got worse, they are nearly all white with puss, finding it difficult to breath and talk properly, i also find it quite hard swallowing, im 16 and i have never had this before so i was very surpised, i have only suffered with tonsil stones before, i just want them gone, i haven't been subscribed any antibiotics as its a viral infection, how long will this last for?
Many Thanks.
I have had tonsilitis for 3 days and if you get 2 scoops of lemon sorbet in a 250 ml glass then put water in it to make it drinkable with a straw, it soothes your throat really well!
I have acute tonsilitis & glandular fever diagnosed by the hospital and have to say, this is the worst sore throat that I've ever experienced.
So bad at night that I can't sleep on my back, tonsils covered in pus both sides, can hardly swallow, and my neck is swollen like a golf ball under each jaw.
Have been on anti biotics for 7 days , 2000mg of penicillin a day and no better, probably as throat caused by a virus (glandular fever) rather than bacterial.
I feel for everyone on here and hope my throat starts to feel better soon. Having never had tonsilitis and now having had it acutely with glandular fever, I have to say its one of the most painful things I have ever experienced)
I'm going to try all the suggestions on here as losing weight fast. Get better soon everyone x
Also to Rach with regards to your 7 year olds tonsillitus, it can last months on end some people have been known to have it for 6 months others on and off constantly throughout a year, if antibiotics are not strong enough to treat the tonsillitus a doctor may advise to have tonsils removed which happened to me, especially if eating has practically ceased. I hope your daughter gets well very soon as its a nasty infection especially for a child.
i had dairy products when i had my tonsils removed due to tonsilitus and lived off of hot chocolate, tomato soup, porridge and ice cream...its absolutely fine in my honest opinion.
Chocolate ice cream Is hurt dont try it
Will smoking cigarettes and drinking beer make tonsillitis worse
Hey, I have had an awful case of tonsilitis for coming on 4 days now. I can't talk, swallowing proves a challenge, therefore eating is almost out of the question. Today I picked up some water soluble aspirin, gargling this solution in a highly concentrated form seemed to help slightly but I find gargling salt-water to be more effective. Good luck everyone :)
We have gone through the mentioned food suggestions, but my daughter- 7 year old- is really not wanting to eat at all!! She has had this bout of tonsillitis for 4 weeks now- she has had 3 bottles of antibiotics (not penicillian as she is allergic), and still has pus spots on the tonsils that I can see and has already lost 2kg. She is not describing pain upon swallowing at the tonsil area, but it is uncomfortable further down her throat.
For regular tonsillitis sufferers- is this length of time relatively normal to be so uncomfortable? and does eating cause so many problems after so long?
Day 6 of my tonsillitis initially had the chills and achy feelings which then left me with a sore throat. Had this condition as a child but don't remember it being quite so painful. Not eaten very much for the past 4 days mainly water and yesterday some liquified soup and ice lollys. Everything hurts so much and you just want to cry as you eat it.
Feeling slightly better this morning and managed to eat some scrambled egg which went down without too much pain. Hopefully I will be able to eat tomorrow as the restriction on food alongside anti biotics is giving me nausea and cramps. Never thought having tonillitis could be so debilitating :(
cheese!!!
i was diagnosed with tonsillitus since wednesday, and i only saw the doctor on thursday morning. he game me anti-biotics but didnt exactly say what to eat and do. all i eat now is chicken soup and water. when can i move on to something else?
Not sure if anyone will read this but I've got it too and found I press the tip of my tongue just above my top teeth on the roof of my mouth and keep it there whilst swallowing I can swallow even pasta with no pain - it might help someone out there?
I can't speak for anyone else, but have found that with acute tonsilitis both tomato soup and real orange ice llollies, really burnt my throat. I have found the best things are soy ice cream to sooth the pain, and an easy thing to eat is tuna flakes in mayonnaise. Good source of protein and relatively easy to swallow. I think the best advice for tonsillitis is to neck several ibuprofen every 5 hours and ride out the pain.
what fruits are you allowed to eat?
Hi, I've had tonsillitis for 3 days now, and its the first time i've had it. But I must say its the most painful thing i've ever experienced. I can't speak, I can't eat or drink anything, and I haven't slept for 2 nights, and the antibiotics hasn't helped at all. I was just wondering if there is anything else at all that could help soothe my throat, because i've tried throat numbing strepsils and attempted to eat an icy pole, but nothing works.
Hi, ive had tonsillitis for 5 days now. Does anyone think that it will be going soon. Today is the first day that ive managed to eat. Ive had a few tomatoes and an ice lolly. But i still find it hard to drink. Ive been taking nurofen every 4 hours, but today the pain has decided to stay away and i feel a bit more alive. Do you think it could be going?..
hi, i went to urgent care on sunday an i was told i had strep throat, but since its gotten worse, even wit medication. now tuesday, im in worse pain an my tonsils are completely covered in white...wondering if i should go see another doctor...
hi,, i have a tonsillities, fever, in my ears a paining then i have headache, so can u pls, help me wat kind of food i will eat in wat is the donts, mean to say wat is the food is not allowed, bec, im leving alone here my family stay in the another country. so no body takecare of my so i need to be strong here.thanks.its very hard to be come sick that ur alone,
I think this is the worst case of tonsillitis I've ever had in the last 19 years of my life! I simply can not eat, drink and sleep properly. The best food I've had would have to be a really ripe cold pear for breakfast and dinner. Before I got sick I was kind of losing my voice and sounded like a dog. There is nothing worse than having tonsillitis and your mother made your fav food!
today i tried drinking orange juice today and i felt like my throat was on fire! my friend who is a nurse said even though hard foods are tough on your throat when you have tonsillitis you should eat hard foods because it gets rid of all of the spots on your tonsills.
i have tonsillitis and my throat stings, i even threw up yesturday. but i was worried that if i eat things that have acid in them it might make me be sick again. will it??? i think it help when i eat icy poles because it soothes my throat.
i just had my tonsils removed and my mom gave me mash potatoes and i was up alot last night coughing up mucus and it hurts and then i was like to my mom did those potatoes have milk in it and yeah they did thats why so dont have dairy products mucus sucks!
I'm nearly over my often reaccuring tonsillitis thanks to much needed antibiotics and I honestly didn't eat for 6 days, I could barely manage a glass of water but I wasn't even hungry!
hello i just 2 days ago got tonsillitis and i believe that you just have to deal with it all. because or else you will starve yourself. i believe spaghetti in a tin is really good but try to get ones that show on the packet that the noodles are not long. icecream was really good for me from your saliva place on a tissue and that way it doesnt hurt. have difflam (gargle) which numbs the throat and the you can swallow tablets. panadol worked for me as well as i had really high and low fevers. but strepsils and honey and lemon strepsils are good as well as honey and lemon in hot water.
i dont no what to eat fully as it really hurts for me and i cannot eat really hard things but I will work this out later but yesterday i had raisin toast and it hurt when i swallowed it but i was so hungry. nutragrain works for breakfast.
hope this helped
IS pineapple and banana good to eat when u have tonsillitis?
I am from the philippines and I am currently employed as an Online English teacher, so our voice serves as the bread and butter of our job. And is it just normal that I sometimes feel very cold and right after that I sweat or feel warm? Thanks again
Hi. It's my third day of having tonsillitis, i just wanna make things clear if its really okay to eat ice cream? like vanilla ice cream from mcdonalds? Please help me,im in despair. I cant talk for two days and its killing me and i myt lose my job :( thanks!
Hi All,
Just diagnosed with Tonsilitis today. I saw 3 doctors over the course of the weekend. I actually took myself to the ER when the first doctor just thought it was an asthma attack. I was finding it hard to breathe and couldn't eat, but I think I was just in a panic due to the fact that food kept feeling like it was getting caught. The other 2 doctors agreed that I would need an anti-inflamatory and some anti-biotics. I've just started taking the meds this morning and I have been able to eat a little today, which is awesome because I hadn't eaten in 2 days, I had only been drinking water. So today some yoghurt, a protein bar which I chewed into mush, half a banana smushed, and some ice cream, success! I ate! at least it's something...going to check in again with the doc. tomorrow, hopefully I'll be clear soon...gosh I really want that pizza I've been dreaming about!
thanks for the help! i go crazy without food (lol) so i am eating mac&&cheese and mashed potatoes. think thats good to eat?
yes he did give me medicine... i still have puss on my right tonsil and its hard to swallow... been taking medicine since saturday... do u think i should be better by now?
hi, i had a sore throat starting monday went to the doctor on saturday and now i have tonsillitis. it is now late moday and my throat still hurts alot and i can barley swallow. should i be better by now? please help im worried!
Is the icecream really advisable to eat when you have a tonsillitis? I thought we have to avoid cold foods and drink when we are suffering from tonsillitis.
Hi, I also have tonsillitis like a lot of you. I'm used to having those...I think I've had as much as 20 in a couple of years. And I have to say that UNSWEETENED APPLESAUCE works soo well for me. It doesn't feel acid at all (not like raw apples:they are painfull)! I'm telling you, you should try it
I had this illness and everytime I swallow liquid or eat something. It feels like something blocking on the back of my throat, it doesn't hurt though its just the stuff or mucus or something thats blocking it.. Is that normal or I need to see my Doctor? Pls help..
I started this week with a minor throat problem, but then developed Tonsillitis AFTER starting a prescription of antibiotics (although it hasn't been officially called it, I can basically deduce it down to it)... I've barely eaten because, well, it's nearly impossible to eat. Hopefully all these foods will help. Thanks!
Hate having tonsillitis cant eat drink or sleep
Hi
I heard that eating or drinking cold stuff isn't good if you have tonsillitis, is that true?
Thanks,
hey , i was in the doctors yesterday morning and he told me that i have severe tonilitus and an anti - septic throat . ive had this before and to be honest its not as bad as my previous experiences with it . i was just wondering , as i havent been eating at all , would it be ok to order spicy chicken later tonight ???
Yuck! I have tonsillitis and it's horrible, I can't eat, drink or anything! Helppp
I've had a blocked nose and a sore throat and then Bang I have tonsillitis, i went to my doctor and she gave me a suscription for penicillin cyrup, it Works in just 1 day, but you have to drink it for about 5 days until symptoms clear so i suggest that to everyone :D All i eat right now is basicly coco pops in cold milk :D Ice cream and mashed potatoes :D I feel better already and i can Actually speak! I was quiet for 2 days!
I've had tonsillitis for about 3 days now and it is so painful to swallow. Never had it like this before and I have a lot more sympathy with people that have it now! Personally, I find cold things really helpful as they help to numb your throat a bit. If you can handle it, toast is also a good one as it stops muck and mucus building up on your tonsils. Also, didn't have a clue about the dairy thing so thanks everyone! Hope everyone feels better soon!!!
I've had tonsillitis the past few days, and all I have basically eaten is jelly & ice-cream and everyday the infection has gotten worse ! I am basically starved to death and I also have a craving for sausages, is there ANY way I can eat solid foods with tonsillitis before I die ? :L
I had strep for about two weeks and it unfortunately turned into tonsillitis. The pain was so bad i could barely open my mouth to speak, and even harder to take my medicine. I have found some relief in certain foods and I find that drinking very warm things such as chamomile tea or soup help me, and I also find relief by slowly drinking ice water or very chilled yogurt. Like so many have mentioned, everyone has a different tolerance to different types of foods and temperatures; i just tried what sounded soothing to me and most things I have tried have given me some type of relief. Hope anyone whose currently suffering with tonsillitis, strep, or a bad sore throat feels better soon!
my god my tonsilitis are so bad i got an allergic reaction to my anitbiotics and i was rushed to hospital.. They gave me injections to calm my swelling down its now my fourth day of having tonsilitis i went and seen another doc and today my temp was 40.6 they cant take them out cause its the first time iv had it -_- ice cubes r probz the best to calm the pain a bit
i currently have tonsillitis and this is the eighth time in 8 months, this time its on the left side of my throat and my uvula keeps sticking to it, it is excruciatingly painful to swallow and all iv'e been able to swallow is strawberry jelly but my stomach is rumbling constantly i need something to eat that will fill me up that is easy to swallow?
Yesterday morning I woke up with the feeling of sinus. Then it got better. But everytime I get up I feel dizzy and my throat burns. When I drink Mango juice or coffee it burns. I thought first I'm getting a Flu, but I dont sneeze or cough, I just feel very drunk, then cold then hot, or tummy cramps. Could it be the signs of Tonsillitis, my tonsils at the back are also swollen. Can you please help me with answers.
This is the third day I've had tonsillitis and I have eaten much in that time. The first day I was ok with ice cream but once the antibiotics kicked in I got a reaction to it. Any dairy will have the same reaction for me but it depends on the antibiotics and the person. So instead of that I've been having jelly and ice-blocks. If your having the same problem you could try that. If your not lucky you.
I have tonsillitis at the moment and when I went to the doctor she suggested that I should avoid any cold liquids as it may irritate my tonsils. She was right, I didn't listen and had some cold juice and it caused coughing and mucus build up. So you could try avoiding any cold liquids such as cold water, juice, yoghurt and ice-cream. Soft fruits and vegetables seem to be the easiest thing for me to get down and my favorite is olives. Also to make the pain go away to make it easier to swallow I take an anti inflammatory such as Nurofen
i have had tonsillitis for over a week now. i had a horrible fever for a week. i didnt know that i could eat ice cream. im going to the doctor tomorrow to ask his opinion. hopefully i can eat the ice cream then be able to drink lots of water, even sipping water is excruciating.
I had tonsilitis 3 times and this is my 3rd one also i been having trouble sleeping because i kept feeling a ticklish feeling my throat
Some great ideas here. I remember when I had my tonsils out, I lived on ice cream and occasionally tapioca. I had my tonsils out in the 70's. My daughter has had tonsilitis twice in the past two years, but the doctors seem to be reluctant to take them out nowadays. Thanks for sharing. Voted up and useful.
my mom says that im fine and that it will clear up soon but i dont really believe. I will ask her to take me to the docters, thanks for the advice!
I dont know what i have but my throat hurts like crazy, i feel slightly like throwing up and i have a headache. also i am freezing one minute and sweating the next i have had this for 2 days now. Any advice????
im pretty sure she meant 18....
Tracy, why is your mom not helping you answer these questions?
hi im 8 ive justfound out that i have tonsillitis ,yet i find it hard to breath plus i have fits in the night only when im in my bed yet when i sleep on the sofa its fine ?????
I have tonsillitus now and I've never thrown up so much before, yesterday all I had was a yoghurt and it made it a lot worse, I haven't eaten anything but that in over 24hours and my stomach is really beginning to hurt, I have no appetite so what's good to eat? Dairy doesn't work for me.
I have had a sore throat since Tuesday night. Went to doctors and I have got tonsillitis. I am 19 years old and never had it before.
Every one is unique. No one has the same methods to help cure anything. Therefore some foods and drinks help certain people. But not everyone.
I have found that ice cream has helped me. Its soothing my throat and helps the pain. Especially while taking tables. As if I get it stuck I have some ice cream to take away the horrible taste.
Some say no to ice cream but I say it's down to you. In my opinion if you don't try the foods and drinks you won't no what helps.
hello,im megan and im 14.

i'm having a tonsillitis today. it keep on coming back. for the third time. i think because i did'nt follow what my doctor said that i should take antibiotics for 1 week. but i stopped drinking during the 3rd day because it feels better already. you guys should follow doctor's instruction. by the way milk is a big no no. as well as egg and anything with caffeine. my doctor said that i should eat pineapple.
In so much pain, was diagnosed with tonsillitis 3 days ago and it still doesn't seem to be getting any better, in fact it feels like they are swelling more, I have had probably the equivalent of a bowl of soup throughout the last three days but I will try some of the ideas on here! Thanks for the advice!
So many people are saying dairy products are good or bad to consume while having tonsillitis. I have had tonsillitis for 5 days now and just yesterday, I tried eating ice cream. I spit up some snotty, ice creamy stuff, sure. I didn't mind though. It didn't hurt at all. After I finished my bowl of ice cream, I chugged a bottle of water without pain. I suggest, if you don't mind spitting up that stuff, eat ice cream before you eat your actual meal. It numbs the tonsils and tastes great.
Was diagnosed with tonsillitis this morning and have barely been able to eat anything for 2 days... Everything hurts or tastes foul! Has anyone else experienced this taste distortion? I'm also sweating like mad one minute and shivering cold the next. The only thing that's actually helped is peanut butter on toast. My throat has actually been soothed by the roughness... I won't be suffering tomorrow will I? Lol

Hi Guys
I'm 13 and Ive developed tonsillitis and strep at the same time! Ive tried very much drinks from water to apple juice to orange juice, it's all causing horrific pain in my throat and chest even when I eat anything is there anything I can do? I can hardly take my anti biotic without being in dying pain.
Hi Guys
I developed tonsilitis for the first time two days ago and couldn't even bear to swallow. After reading this site I was slightly scared to go with ice-cream (being dairy and all) but I have had the same experience as the MAJORITY of people here....plain ice cream is the easiest and best thing to eat and at least it has some calories in there to stop you feeling more weak and ill. I literally couldn't make myself eat anything else....it's been a godsend.
I just got tonsillitis :( A lot of these comments are really great.
My two cents about dairy:
There are some reasons why dairy may cause you to feel like you're producing more or thicker mucus--but many studies prove this to be wrong (look it up).
Maybe it's an allergy thing (some degree of lactose intolerence is common).
It isn't really proven one way or another (Google "dairy and mucus," and you'll see what I mean).
Good luck, all! And I agree: if you use common sense, you'll be alright.
You really shouldn't trawl through these sites when you've got said illness. My theory is, try ice cold water, try warm tea, porridge, whatever, everyone is different, so what might be a nightmare for one person, may be a god send for another. All these comments make it sound like having a glass of milk is going to kill you. It's ridiculous.
I have had tonsilitis now for about 4 - 3 days, and swallowing anything has seemed impossible. What i found really soothing was Sorbet, as it has the same sensation as ice cream but without the dairy problem, but its beyond frustrating not being able to calmly drink water, and im running out of ideas and feeling weaker each day, what can i do for immediate relief from the pain? Im currently on anti biotics and have tried mouthwash (mint and salt) difflam and panadol, nothing seems to soothe the pain, any ideas?? I'm desperate.
Isn't ice cream only reccomended when you have had your tonsils out???
I am currently enduring tonsillitis for the second time this year. I essentially ignore it now and indulge in foods that don't feel so pleasant going down (i.e. for lunch yesterday I had a classic double with fries from wendy's lol). I have a specialist appointment soon and I want these suckers out, especially as a university student it puts quite the damper on my studying efforts. Stay strong
My aunt lives next door to me and is a nurse. she also told me this about dairy, but as my sister can't have dairy theres plenty of goats milk and soya yogurts.
I had scrambled egg today and it was pretty good, I got distracted by something on TV and didn't really notice i was eating it, and it didn't really hurt much at all. Everything seems so bland after a while of eating soup and yogurts.
Oddly, the best thing, i find to eat, that has a nice taste and is easy to swallow is pots of baby pureéd fruit. It sounds a bit odd, as most pots of baby food are really terrible, but these are just fruit pureé watered down a bit.
I never remember having this much trouble with food when i had tonsilitis when i was little, but the i was probably kept happy with icecream!
Thanks for the great artical, i've never thought of mashed potatoes before so I'll probably make a meal out of it tomorrow!
i got told i had tonsillitis yesterday and have been eating soup and soaking bread in it, everything else hurts too much especially ice cream i dont know how all the comments on ice cream are so positive, it stings my throat so much because its so cold, any more ideas please
I have not been diagnosed yet seeing doc tomorrow but I find soup apple juice an a bit of ice cream then a glass of water is good
Is that ok
Okay thank you, I will and are noodles and mash potato good for tonsilitus?
Scared to try anything other than frozen poppas...
I have recently been to the hospital as of my fever getting worse and my neck swelling that I couldnt breathe, I thought I had glandular fever... Anyways, walking around makes me want to faint n lying down makes me want to be sick, I have a empty stomach too.. I havent slept all night and I can barely swallow my capusule with water, im in so much pain.. Any ideas to make me feel better, or ny thing I can eat? :/
Thank you x
no dairy promise i feel my throat is hurt but i ignored it! i don't know milk is not good for those who have tonsil now im suffering it hurts so much and my tonsil became red... thanks for those who give their comments!
Can I eat hot things like soup etc
Hi
I've just been diagnosed with tonsillitus today (Monday) after starting with a sore throat on Friday.
I have been eating very little over the last 2 days but have been managing to cry my way through a bowl of soup with bread soaked in it.
Today however I can't even manage that; everything other than water feels like acid and leaves a really bad burning sensation in my mouth and my throat! Is this normal with tonsillitus?
I've had tonsillitus twice before (years ago) but it was never this bad. Any suggestions anyone, I could do with a boost of something other than water.
So what would you recommend a good diet to be?
Can I eat mcdonalds after having it 3 days?
I am going to my doctor soon, I was just seeing if people had similar symptoms as I do to seek what foods I should eat and what to avoid in the time being. Thank you, I too wish to get well fast.
I'm not sure what I have, but one side of my throat is sore and seems like the left hurts when I swallow. I've had it for three days. It's irritated when I drink citric or eat orange and when I began to drink water. And i feel as if there's something in the back of my throat when I swallow on the left side. I've never had tonsilitus or any of that sort, just normal cold sore throats. I'm worried. Can anyone help? -Kaitlyn
Everyone is saying NO DAIRY! And that is what I have heard for a long time, that dairy can cause mucus when you have tonsillitis. But SO MANY PEOPLE are saying that they had dairy when they had tonsillitis and it was fine.....so I am pretty sure to NOT have dairy, but how can these people not get mucus from it?!?
No! No, dairy stuff!
I have tonsillitis right now I have a tiny amount of milk in tea that is it.
Try soup with small bits of bread and butter in it, (the butter helps it slide down the throat)
My tonsils are really bad right now so I am just not eating anything -_-
But if you do have a gap in-between your tonsils unlike me, do that ^
I dont agree atall... i brought some vanillia haggen daz... hurt for about 5 mins of eating it... then all of a sudden it soothed my throat for a good 3 hours... the only things ive eaten is soup, trifle, tea, and ice cream and its the best food i could recommend... so im my opioion its dairy for the win.. :)
Thanks for all of the suggestions, but never have dairy.
Dairy is a big NO NO.....causes mucus but sorbet and fruit popsicles are good. Applesauce and warm tea are two things I am going to.try.today. The thought of orange juice sounds.terrible on my poor sore throat.
I'm suffering with bad tonsillitis, for the 12th time this year, and i'm getting them removed in 10 days. I've tried basically everything, and none of it works. Sorry to be a pessimist but I'm not quite sure there is much you can do.
There is an ice cream brand called Tofuti. It's absolutely delicious and tastes exactly like regular ice cream. It has no dairy in it. It is soy based. But they load it with sugar pretty much so it tastes even better than regular ice cream! That fixes the milk problem :)
I actually just got back from the ER yesterday with a bad case of tonsillitis and pharyngitis. I need to go out and get some
Yes you should avoid dairy, for that reason that it can build up mucus which may make you cough or add to the bacteria (or something). However, soya milk is not the same, as made with soya beans, so you can continue to have smoothies with banana and berries, but use soya milk, you can also use it in porridge and rice pudding and mash potato, all of which ive been eating in the last few days of tonsillitis. :)
Reading this page whilst eating a bowl of porridge. Thought this was a great idea and was very pleased with myself as it's going down quite well on 2nd day of tonsillitis, but then I got to the last few comments about strep loving dairy. Arghh! Best have plenty of fruit juice to wash it down. :-(
last night i had some milk based products and during the night i had to kepp coughing up mucus it was horrible so here a little advise, dont have dairy!
Milk based products make things worse, you get mucus build up at the back of your throat and constantly have to cough to clear it, plus there's bacteria in milk that strep loves. You should drink lsots of water, suck on ice cubes, eat things like fruit lollies. To begin with avoid, like the plague, anything with milk, orange juice, chocolate (of any sort - it coats your throat and makes it worse) and anything solid. Once the symptoms start to disappear (it's VITAL you finish your course of antibiotics) then you can introduce more solids into your diet.
I have had tonsilitis six times in a year once every month i have been on antibiotics for 6 months i am use to this now and they still wont do anything. when i have it i always find that icecream soothes the back of my throat and numbs it a bit so i dont get much pain swallowing it and if i need to take a tablet i always eat a bit of icecream before it helps swallow. Hope this helps all of you and hope you dont have to suffer like me x x
These are great suggestions for someone who has tonsillitis or has just had their tonsils removed. Ice cream is probably the most popular option when the individual is younger in age!
Thanks for sharing this information.

I'm on my 5th day of having tonsillitis now, as well as having a cold! So i can't breathe through my nose and it hurts to breathe through my mouth as well! As well as having a pounding headache, tiredness, fever and sore neck! Its the first time i've had tonsillitis and i never knew the pain would be this bad! I just want to cry because i feel so helpless! I'm 19 and at university but all i wish is that i was at home for my mum to take care of me! But i feel like i'm being a bit overdramatic since i know so many people that have had tonsillitis, so i haven't gone home (also the thought of a 4 and a half hour train journey while i feel like this is enough to make me change my mind!)
I noticed that a lot of people on here say to avoid all dairy when you have tonsillitis but i've found one of the only things i could eat in the first couple of days was porridge! I make porridge with half semi-skimmed milk and half water and let it cool down quite a bit before i eat it so it's not very creamy but the warmth meant it didn't hurt my throat as i ate it. However it did nothing to soothe my throat other than when i was eating it! But just wanted to point out that you shouldn't automatically rule dairy out!
